Lesson Learned

We had a scare this past weekend, which involved calling 911 and taking Aaron to the emergency room.

From about 6 am to 6 pm on both Saturday and Sunday, Aaron was hard at it in the yard.  On Saturday, he stayed hydrated with water and Gatorade.  He was exhausted that evening.  The next day, he got up and did it all again except with just water, no Gatorade and hardly any breaks.

Later Sunday evening, we had dinner plans with friends and really had no breaks in-between yard work and getting ready to go.  We got downtown and our food had just arrived at our table and Aaron said his hamstring was tightening and cramping up on him.  Then he stood up and said he was feeling light headed.  Within a few seconds, he nose-dived into our table, passed out and fell backwards onto the floor and convulsed a few times in an unconscious state.  I screamed and yelled call 911 and grabbed my phone to call myself.

At this point, several other restaurant patrons had 911 on the phone and within a few brief moments, Aaron regained consciousness.  I still had 911 on the line and he told me to cancel the ambulance, that he was fine.  Typical man response…Right away, we knew he was severely dehydrated and got him water and a cold washcloth.  I really was more so in a state of shock of what just happened and trying to figure out what to do next.

With a little effort, I talked him into going to the ER.  Being right downtown, we were close to the hospital and on the way there, he commented that his leg was cramping up again, so I go into full panic mode, rushed him into the ER in a wheelchair and they started an IV on him right away.

After spending 4 hours in the ER, he got thoroughly checked, blood work, glucose test, CT scan of his head, EKGs, urine test, 4 bags of sodium chloride pumped into him, etc.  When he first came in, his heart rate and blood pressure was high.  They checked it often and it returned to normalcy fairly quickly.  All tests came back fine; he did not have a heat stroke but suffered from exhaustion.

Monday was spent taking it easy and keeping the fluids running thru him.  He was pretty tired and got some extra rest in.  This whole thing shook me up, during those moments, the look on his face and unconscious state; I really thought I was losing him in that moment, very scary stuff!

When I thought about it, he really had a crazy week.  He was in Vegas for work earlier that week, came back to extra work from being gone and then went straight into major yard work.  He never stops enough to rest, which I am now more aware of the importance to restore and rest and to stop pushing ourselves a million miles a minute. Sometimes it is for our own good to say no to projects, invites, work, and other obligations when we are feeling overwhelmed.  We often need to remind ourselves that God made a 7th day for rest and restoration and we need to be more respectful of that gift we are given.  As silly as it sounds, it’s not easy for either one of us to rest and do nothing; we are people who like to be busy bees so still something we need to work on.  Funny huh, work on working on nothing basically is what we need to work on J

Lesson learned and to be passed on to others, don’t overdo it in the summer heat.  Take breaks and let your body cool down and drink not only water, but Gatorade as well.  Eat often (he had only had a salad that day).  And if everything doesn’t get done, leave it for another day; it’s not worth over stressing your body.  Our deck didn’t get stained like we wanted to but oh well; I just don’t care about that silly deck anymore.  I am happy and thankful to report that Aaron is healthy and 100% well now and I am beyond grateful for that!

Char!

What's new with Charley....

• Lately, she has been getting stuck under our bed. During her sleep she shifts herself until she is completely under the bed and stuck or else she is after a toy and manages to get wedged under there. Then she tries not to bark and wake us up but it’s pretty obvious she is struggling to get out and she may even let out a little yip. So then I have to grab her by the collar, turn her on her side and drag her out from under the bed. That crazy dog!
Normally asleep half under the bed
• On numerous occasions, we are just sitting in the living room and out of nowhere; she lets out the loudest burps. It always takes Aaron and I by surprise and we look at each other and say did she just burp?!?! They are loud and she has no shame in letting out a monster belch.

Smiles like she has acorns in her cheeks
• She doesn’t try to get in the shower with me anymore but she likes to bring one of her toys and drop it in while I’m showering and then run away real fast. I can’t help but think how she is like a little kid sometimes!

Usually after a toy under the couch
• She knows her territory quite well and one day she was going hysterical in the backyard. So I went out there and could not figure out what in the world she was barking at. Once I realized it, I chuckled. There were golf club sitting in our neighbors driveway and she knew those aren’t normally sitting there and she was barking at them like they were going to attack her.
Loves playing frisbee
• Aaron gives Charley a back rub/scratch every morning to help wake her up. He says he heard it makes dogs live longer. LOL! What about the wife, I ask!

Lazy day naps... who looks more comfortable here? :)
• Sometimes I forget that she’s still a baby and still experiencing new things for the first time. Once the weather got nice, I took her with me on a path I’ve been on a million times. So we are jogging along and all of a sudden I get jerked back and she is completely frozen in her step. That’s when I realized we were about to cross a bridge over a small creek and she saw this and thought what the heck is this? She was not going to go off of pavement onto wooden planks! I finally coaxed her over it and as she walked across it, she hunched down real low like she was going to fall off the bridge or something. Such a chicken!
Tend to find her in her kennel even on the weekends catching a nap
• When we picked her up after leaving her behind a week on our vacation she jumped into my lap and I got one big kiss on my face. Melted my heart! Then for the following week, she followed us around the house closely, not letting us out of her sight. So sad, I hate leaving her!

Cuddled up to me the day we got back from vacation
• She has gotten a lot better with the ‘excited pee’ but the other day I came home and when I got to the top of the stairs, she was sitting in ‘time out’. I was like oh oh, she has done something because she is not running over to me and looks very guilty. Yep, she got excited when she heard the garage door and pee’d just a little at the top of the stairs. I was mad but had to chuckle that before I even walked in the door, she had already put herself in ‘time out’ because she knew what she had done.

Loves sleeping with her blanky and bear
• When she gets excited, her tail wags uncontrollably that her entire backside is swinging side to side, it’s cute.
Starbucks Puppy Latte is quite the treat!
• She’s becoming more of a cuddler. I know a lot of people think it gross we let her in our bed, but I don’t care. And for the record, my bedding does get washed more than yours probably does.

This girl has monster feet (and I'm not talking about my foot here...) she's already a 6 1/2 shoe size!
• We are a lot more selective in the toys we give her. She can now chew up a toy in no time. We have to test the durability in the store and I’m always surprised how we think there is no way she will tear thru something and within minutes she has it ripped apart. I feel like we are going thru a lot of toys right now. But I’d rather have that then chewing on our stuff.

We are coming up on her first birthday this summer, I can't believe how fast time has gone!  She certainly the comedian of the family, continually cracking us up and we sure do love this puppy to pieces!

2 Weekends, 2 Families

The last 2 weekends were spent making the rounds with both sides of the family.  With beautiful weather, it was a great time to get out and see our families.

The first weekend in May was spent with Aaron's side of the family.  Our niece, Aniston was being baptized on that day.  It seems like every time we see our oldest niece, Adalyn, she just has more and more energy!  I soon as she saw me, she goes "Aunt Erin!!" and does a running jump into my lap, what a sweetie!  Then she talked about a million miles a minute and I could only catch bits and pieces of everything she was trying to tell me, LOL!  All in all, had a good day trip back to see everyone.

This past weekend we hit the road back to my parent's house.  We had another great weekend and baby Elijah was center of attention there.  He is such a good baby, just sits back and checks everything out that's going on.  He loved just sitting in the kitchen in his high chair and watch us all cook. On Sunday we all headed for breakfast in the park with my parents, Cody's family, and my grandparents.  It was a great day out and Elijah got plenty of attention from Grandma and Grandpa Murphy!  Another fun weekend was had.

Day 6: The Fiasco Getting Home

Day 6 we woke up in Miami.  We were assigned a 9:30 am check out for the ship.   We went thru customs quickly and we were up in the air as what to do because our flight didn’t leave until 1:30 but since we were loaded down with luggage, we just went straight to the airport, which I’m glad we did because we stood in a ridiculous line for security that moved so slow.  We definitely didn’t have much time to waste after going thru that.

Skipping topics quickly, I did get motion sick on the ship.  I had the prescription patch (Transderm Scop) that goes behind your ear, supposedly the best stuff.  Okay, suppose to stay on when wet and it doesn’t.  Then my neck started to get real itchy as well as my throat was drying out real bad.  I think it was too strong and was having a bad reaction to it so I switched over to Meclizine (pill) that made me drowsy and somewhat dizzy.  Again, I think too strong.  I think I would have been best off with just over the counter Dramamine.  I think changing between different forms of remedies was not helping me out either.  Overall the motion sickness was bearable, I was able to still enjoy vacation but 4 days on the ship was my max this go around.

So back to the airport, I’m still pretty motion sick and we got to Orlando and it's a zoo.
I’ve never had to go thru security twice and in Orlando they made us go back thru security to get to our next gate.  It was chaotic, kids everywhere with Mickey Mouse ears on and I just wasn’t in the mood for a gazillion 5 year olds bouncing off the walls, boggling down the line. But I was getting a kick out of the stuff these kids had… the kid in front of us had a Harry Potter plastic broomstick and I couldn’t help but think what a sucker his mom was for buying this broomstick and now she has to carry it on and take it thru security.  I was also thinking that broom is the real deal; I’m sure as a kid that is pretty cool stuff, his mom probably spent $100 at Disney when she could have bought it online for half the price.  I bet that broom ends up in that family’s garage sale next year for $15.  Some insight into my disgruntled thoughts as I was impatiently waiting in line.

Then, right before our flight was to take off; it stormed causing an hour and half delay.  We sat on the tarmac forever and had to shut the engine down to conserve gas because the runway was so backed up due to this storm.  Then we got in the air and were heading to Memphis and I’ve been in turbulence before but this was bad.  Even Aaron, who never is uneasy agreed.  Well while we were in the air, we missed our connection home.  Probably best we missed it, I was so sick from that flight that I don’t think I could have made it thru another one.

So staying the night in Memphis it was!  Not only did we miss our flight and have to stand in line for an hour to figure out arrangements, we then had to wait another hour for them to find our luggage and then another 30 minutes for transportation to our hotel and then of course, delivery time for a pizza was going to take an hour as well.  By 10:45 pm, I comfortable in the hotel bed, eating pizza.  I rearranged our plans to have Charley boarded longer and was absolutely exhausted from our day’s travel.  But on the positive side, our flight landed safely and Delta set us in a nice hotel with a comfy bed.  And was thankful this fiasco happened on the way home and not at the beginning of our trip, wheew!

The next morning we got up and got home on a direct flight, no problems, got home just after noon.

My overall thoughts on the cruise – loved it!  The motion sickness part was the only downfall and a lot of people assured me that I wouldn’t get motion sick so I was really surprised by how much it did affect me.  Aaron on the other hand, was really unaffected and did not experience any motion sickness and did not take any preventative medication.

I do wonder though if a longer cruise would have been better… Hear me out, many of the longer ones have a full day at sea, I could have used a day at sea where I just slept in and got a really good long nap in, I think my major lack of sleep didn’t help out the way I was feeling.  Just a thought, not sure if it would have made any difference or just added to the problem.  Although a longer vacation really wasn't necessary, being gone for a week was plenty of a vacation for us, we were ready to get back to the comforts of our home.

I thought the cruise itself was great and I would definitely recommend Royal Caribbean anyone!  We would definitely consider a cruise again in the future!
